Cold and flu season is right around the corner! With the unpredictability of North Carolina’s winter weather, ranging from 70-degree days to sub-20-degree temperatures within the same week, it is crucial to be ready for the cold and flu season. As Hailey attends high school and I work as a chef at Elon University, we come into contact with many people on a daily basis. By taking preventative measures to reduce the spread of germs, we can be better prepared for the onset of sickness.
Although getting sick can be unpredictable, there are three simple tips that can help you prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season. While it may seem crazy, the fluctuations in weather can lead to an increase in sickness. Nonetheless, by implementing these tips, you can help safeguard yourself against the spread of illness.
Disinfect Everything
This goes beyond disinfecting the toys that the kids play with, which is what you should do monthly anyways. I’m talking phones, laptops, computer’s mouse & keyboards, remotes. Things around the house that people interactive with daily, things that you don’t always think about.
Anything that it’s touched on the daily in the house and car. You are able to put non-electronic toys and items through the dishwasher. You can get some disinfection wipes and wipe down counters, door knobs and sinks daily, to help keep germs to a minimum.
Proper Hand Washing
During cold and flu season, we prefer to keep our medicine cabinet well-stocked. To keep things simple, we make sure to have basic items such as vapor rub, saline nose spray, multivitamins, and Children’s Delsym on hand.

Cold and flu season is the worst. I just got my flu shot last monday and of course now I’m feeling run down. But our weather keeps bouncing back and forth between fall and winter temperatures. I think the name of the game is trying to be as germ free as possible. Since I go into lot of schools during the school year, I am constantly washing my hands and carrying disinfectant wipes. Cannot be too safe.

We have lysol wipes all over our house. At least once a week, I wipe every remote, phone, faucet, door handle, and lock with them.
Both of my girls do gymnastics and the gym is filled with nasty snot monsters! It is essential to have sanitizer everywhere until we can get home and wash hands!
