If you were obsessed with Glee back in the day, then you probably remember the iconic boyfriend pillow episode where the girls made pillows out of dress shirts for cuddling. Honestly, it was hilarious… but also kind of genius. This DIY boyfriend pillow is the perfect cozy craft for movie nights, dorm rooms, long-distance relationships, or just adding a funny and creative touch to your room decor.
The best part about this project is how customizable and easy it is to make. You can use an oversized button-up shirt, add your favorite scent, personalize it with patches or vinyl, and even create the classic stuffed “arm” that wraps around you. It’s budget-friendly, beginner-friendly, and surprisingly comfortable once finished.
Supplies You Will Need
- Oversized shirt
- Pillow stuffing
- Fabric glue (optional)
- Old glove (optional for the hand)
- Cologne or perfume (Optional)
How to Make a DIY Boyfriend Pillow
Step 1: Choose Your Shirt
Pick an oversized button-up shirt for the best results. Flannel shirts, dress shirts, and soft cotton shirts work especially well.
You can use:
- A thrifted shirt
- An old shirt from your partner
- A fun patterned shirt
- Oversized pajama tops
Step 2: Sew the Bottom Closed
Button the shirt fully and turn it inside out. Sew across the bottom opening of the shirt to create the pillow base. If you don’t sew often, fabric glue can work for a temporary option.
Step 3: Create the Pillow
Turn the shirt right side out and stuff the body of the shirt with pillow stuffing or insert a bed pillow inside. Fluff it until it feels soft and evenly filled.
Step 4: Make the Arm
Stuff one sleeve firmly so it holds shape. You can leave the sleeve as-is or attach a glove filled with stuffing to create a “hand” for the full boyfriend pillow effect.
Step 5: Position the Arm
Arrange the stuffed sleeve across the front of the pillow so it wraps around you naturally. Sew or pin the sleeve into place.
Tips
- Use a soft flannel or cotton shirt for maximum comfort
- Don’t overstuff the arm or it may feel stiff
- Wash the shirt before starting the project
- Add a removable pillow insert to make cleaning easier
- Spray a light scent on the fabric for a more personalized touch
- Thrift stores are great for finding oversized shirts on a budget

Now you have a cozy cuddle buddy ready for movie nights, naps, or just a little extra comfort when you need it. Trust me — you’re going to love your DIY boyfriend pillow!

Never heard of these! Sounds fun though!
Omg I have to try this! It looks so comfy!
How cute!! I just saw a bunch of flannel shirts on sale at our local farm supply store. I may have to make an excuse to make another trip and grab a few to make one (or more). What a lovely idea!
Yesss! I have to make a few more, I thought of new ways to do it, so I’ll have a boyfriend pillow 2.0 soon lol
This is super cool and fun! plus I love that it is a DIY project as I am always in need of a new one. I am going to find a black and red check short to recreate it for myself 🙂 So much fun!
I love this idea. I want to take some of my grams old shirts and make some of these for the littles.. Hugs from grandma! AWESOME!!

Haha, I love this idea. I’m going to try an do this tomorrow.
Wow, you are such a genius, love the idea so much and it looks so fun! This is awesome and you can actually produce this thing and make it in the production. I guess it going to sell good.
I had a few people tell me this. I need to master it first, then best believe. Next level single, lol.
Ok this concept is new to me! Haha I think I should let a few of my friends know about this. I don’t really need one…I think I have too many pillows…Hubby, kid, and my two cats!
Some really helpful advice and tips here! I could do with one of these hehe! x
Interesting. good idea for recycling an old shirt, especially if you don’t want to live with anyone. Like I do, I like living alone but sleep better when the need to cuddle is met.
Sounds really cozy indeed, nice diy for valentines too
This is so COOL!!!!!!!!!! I’d have to do it longer maybe the pj pants attached so I could sleep on my side (I sleep with a leg hooked)… Maybe just 1 leg filled would be enough… Hmmm. I usually use a body pillow but this would hug back… Hmmm!!

What a great way to repurpose a cozy flannel shirt! It would be great to take on a road trip, too. You could prop up books and snacks on it.
This is so cute. I am married and think I need one of these for when I want to get comfy and my husband isn’t around.
Thanks i will make one.
I also write guide on it.
thanks
Never seen this before. Looks awesome! I may have to buy a flannel shirt just for this project
Great DIY for using an old flannel shirt. Love that you can make it without a sewing machine.
